I have been playing for Downingtown West for six years, starting with the boys’ varsity team during my freshman year of high school. Since then, I have played for the girls' varsity team, where we’ve had the privilege of winning three Flyers Cup championships. Over the past two to three years, the girls' program has seen impressive growth, expanding from 15 to 30 players. It’s been amazing to witness and be part of this development.
High school girls' hockey in Pennsylvania may not yet rival Minnesota, but it is certainly on the rise. I began playing for Downingtown West Girls' Hockey in 7th grade, and since then, I’ve witnessed firsthand the growth of the sport. Each year, more girls join the team, contributing to the expansion of the game. While the level of competition may not be as high as in other regions, it is incredibly rewarding to be part of this upward trajectory.
Downingtown West Ice Hockey fosters an inclusive environment that attracts girls to the sport, making it accessible and welcoming. The program competes against other high schools in the area, playing approximately 15 games per season, not including playoffs. Being involved in this growth has been a truly exciting experience.
The Flyers Cup Tournament is an annual event hosted by the Philadelphia Flyers, offering local high school teams the opportunity to compete for a championship. This tournament holds significant meaning for the school, the team, and for me personally. As the Flyers Cup championship approaches each year, excitement builds throughout the community. It fosters a competitive spirit within girls' hockey and provides players with tangible goals to strive for, whether it's the championship trophy, individual accolades, or, for me, a chance to advocate for the recognition of women's sports.
The Flyers Cup committee excels at creating a professional atmosphere for high school athletes. They broadcast all games and actively promote the tournament on social media, reaching a wider audience and elevating the visibility of the event. Additionally, the committee collaborates closely with Philadelphia Blind Hockey, offering unique opportunities for players to engage with the broader hockey community. Last year, I had the privilege of meeting some of their athletes, which was an invaluable experience.
By partnering with organizations like Philadelphia Blind Hockey, the Flyers Cup not only raises awareness for women's sports but also strengthens community connections. I am grateful for these opportunities, and fortunate to have been part of a team that has won three Flyers Cups in the past four years. We are eager to pursue another championship this season!
