PKS is dedicated to refining my fundamentals off the ice in order to enhance my overall speed and optimize my on-ice performance. The program emphasizes the importance of shapes and angles to unlock my full speed potential, focusing on the outward force required to generate maximum power and efficiency in my movements.
During college speed sessions, we work on a variety of drills, ranging from top-speed exercises to change-of-direction movements. As a hockey player, I particularly enjoy the explosive and agility-focused drills. Each session begins with a 15-20 minute warm-up that includes dynamic stretching, skip drills, and occasionally banded jumps. The training then progresses into sled sprints, resistance or assisted movements, and top-speed drills, all designed to enhance speed, power, and quickness on the ice.
I rely on PKS because I firmly believe that speed is built off the ice. The training at PKS is highly strategic, with a focus on both physical development and learning. Speed training targets muscle groups that I don’t typically engage while playing hockey, providing a well-rounded approach to my athleticism. I find the force output drills particularly beneficial, as they help train my body to generate more spring, ultimately contributing to improved overall speed on the ice.
As a hockey player, I never used to prioritize running, thinking it wasn’t necessary. However, in the summer of 2024, I started attending Paul Kenny Speed sessions, and I instantly enjoyed it. I now look forward to the early mornings and the 6:45 A.M. speed sessions. What I love most about college speed training is the focus on change of direction and force output, both of which are directly applicable to my game. I can confidently say that my speed on the ice improved throughout the summer sessions on the turf. During the offseason, I typically aim for one speed session per week, as I feel the benefits but also want to minimize the risk of injury.
